Assignment 5- Still Life Assignment- Spencer Strasser
Assignment 5
By Spencer Strasser
Still Life:
Introduction/Theme:
For this assignment I took on a theme while taking this series of still life photos. My theme for these pictures is "Out with the Old and In with the New". Throughout all four pictures there is this constant theme of the evolution of objects and how the old are taking more of a backseat to the newer objects.
Photos:
To create my studio, I brought a foldable table from my garage and placed it right up to my living room wall as I believe the colours mixed quite well. As well, the spot of which I was taking the pictures was right next to a window in order to gain some natural light. As well for an even cooler effect in terms of lighting, I put a reading lantern under the table with the light pointing up which gave it a vibrant glow.
Picture 1:
This picture focuses on the evolution of the banana. In the back you have the old brown bananas, in the middle there is a slightly aged banana and spotlight in the front you have the much newer bananas.
Picture 2:
This picture focuses on the life of a flower. In the far back with a darker shade are the dying, mouldy flowers. Whereas spotlight in the front once more are the brand new vibrant flowers.
Picture 3:
This picture focuses on the evolution of technology and especially highlighting the evolution of movie watching. In the far back there is the VHS, closer to the middle you have the DVD and in the front shining and big, you have the present way of watching movies and tv shows which happens to be Netflix.
Picture 4:
This picture focuses on an older pair of this model of shoe compared to its newer pair. In the back the dirty, broken up and ripped pair of shoes are darker and dirty. Whereas spotlight in the front are the vibrant white new versions of the shoes. The lighting from the reading lamp under the table is especially visible in this photo and gives it a certain glow.
Extra:
This assignment was quite fun as i got to really attempt to be creative and make a studio in my home. As well, I was able to be creative by thinking of this theme. However, not all my endeavours ended up working out as I originally attempted to make my studio out of cardboard by taping up too pieces as seen below. I ended up switching to what i had explained earlier in the assignment and I was very happy with how that went!
